LandxSea Monthly: Folktales

LandxSea Monthly’s series of Powerful Films about People and Planet returns to Montrose Playhouse this January with FOLKTALES, a heart-warming, uplifting documentary about the irrepressible bond between humans and their dogs, set against an inhospitable landscape of northernmost Norway. From Academy Award®-nominated filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Jesus Camp), FOLKTALES is a deeply moving and timely documentary following a group of teenagers who've chosen an unconventional path, spending their gap year learning to dog sledge and thrive in the Arctic Norwegian wilderness, searching for connection and purpose in our fast-paced modern world. At Pasvik Folk High School, young people discover something extraordinary: the chance to transform their lives. With gentle guidance from dedicated teachers and the companionship of a yard full of spirited Alaskan huskies, these students uncover hidden strengths within themselves while forging profound bonds with the land, the animals, and each other. An alternative vision of life in a world dominated by screens and social media. For nearly two centuries, Scandinavian folk high schools - some inspired by the ancient wisdom of Norse mythology - have championed a beautiful philosophy: that nature, simplicity, and community hold the power to reshape young lives. Through stunning cinematography and intimate storytelling, Ewing and Grady invite us to witness young people at a pivotal moment, standing at the edge of adulthood, at the edge of the world, discovering what it truly means to be alive.DocumentaryPT1H46M12A2026-01-12
