LandxSea Monthly: Rivers & Tides
Celebrate the launch of our 2025 LandxSea Film Festival theme 'Creative Ground: Artists Respond to the Climate' with this special screening of Rivers & Tides, Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy’s iconic collaboration with director Thomas Riedelsheimer.
With Goldsworthy’s 50-year retrospective now open at the National Galleries of Scotland, and Riedelsheimer’s latest film Tracing Light having its Scottish premiere at LandxSea Film Festival on 13 September, this screening also welcomes Montrose’s new Sea Change embedded artist, Eve Mosher.
Andy Goldsworthy is an internationally-recognised English sculptor and environmentalist, based in Dumfriesshire, whose influential body of work centres on the creation of site-specific land art using natural materials like flowers, leaves, stones, and ice. Goldsworthy is unique in his commitment to minimal intervention in nature, working only with available materials he finds on-site.
Most of his sculptures are small-scale and temporary, created using just his hands and simple tools. He allows natural processes of growth and decay to be integral to the artwork. Photography becomes crucial for documenting these ephemeral pieces. Goldsworthy is considered the founder of modern rock balancing and emphasises working with nature's existing processes rather than against them.
In Rivers & Tides, director Thomas Riedelsheimer follows Goldsworthy as he constructs his art everywhere from upstate New York to his home village in Scotland, and questions the solitary artist about his inspirations, frustrations and artistic goals. Captured on film both in real time and through timelapse, we witness the creation and collapse of Goldsworthy’s works accompanied by his soft, thoughtful musings.
Come see this stunning film on the big screen, pick up a programme, and chat with our team about what’s coming up in September!
“As the film's images accumulate, the movie becomes a sustained and ultimately refreshing meditation on surrender to the idea of temporality.” - New York Times
“Riedelsheimer's camerawork and editing is supremely confident and richly perfect. It will be hard to imagine another documentary on the artistic condition that comes close to Rivers And Tides.” - Eye for FilmDocumentaryPT1H32MU2025-08-18Andy Goldsworthy
