LandxSea Monthly: Yanuni
LandxSea is delighted to bring back Richard Ladkani’s powerful documentary YANUNI to the big screen this February, winner of the Audience Award at LandxSea Film Festival in 2025!
Recently shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature at the 2026 Academy Awards, the film has been collecting accolades at film festivals across the globe.
This Leonardo DiCaprio-produced eco doc offers an unflinching look at the front lines of the Brazilian Amazon, where Indigenous leader Juma Xipaia and her husband, Hugo, fight for their land, their lives, and the future of their unborn child.
Taking us into the Xipaya Indigenous Territory in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest, YANUNI centres on the fight to protect Juma’s lands from destruction, as we follow the Indigenous chief, her partner and their community as they navigate a landscape under siege. As illegal miners close in on their village and Juma’s pregnancy advances, each day brings fresh tests of their courage, determination, love, and survival.
Director Richard Ladkani captures the raw power and ancient wisdom of Juma’s people, their rituals, stories, and unbreakable bond with a fragile land under existential threat. The film cuts between Hugo's armed riverbank patrols and Juma's defiant speeches at COP26 in Glasgow, exposing the brutal collision between violence and hope. A battle cry demanding we stand with those whose very existence is resistance, YANUNI shatters borders with its urgent truth: defending our home is no longer optional.
